What is a Domain Name?

A domain name in technical terms is an identification label meant to define a realm of administrative autonomy or authority over the internet. The domain name is brought into effect through domain name registration. The domain name gets used in different networking contexts and application specific purposes. For the common web user, the domain name when made active through the domain name registration process is used to activate a website and to make it work. Domain names are segregated into various categories. There are the top level domain names, then there are the generic top level domains and then finally there are country code top level domains.

There are individual internet host computers which use domain names as host identifiers. These host names appear as components of the Uniform Resource Locator. The domain names also get used up as simple identification labels to indicate top ownership and control of a particular resource. Examples include, realm identifiers used in Session Initiation Protocol and Domain Keys meant for verifying DNS Domains in email systems.

The most important fact for which domain name registration is done is to make sure that people find the names easy to recall and identify. Effective name identification is something that sells amongst people, and domain names ensure that people are able to identify with the domain name.
